Water report

This is the Ward labs water report for Baltimore City that I got last summer. I ran it through a carbon filter before sending it off. My water comes from the Montebello plant according to this map: http://cityservices.baltimorecity.gov/dpw/waterwastewater02/waterquality8.html

pH 7.6
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Est 203
Electrical Conductivity, mmho/cm 0.34
Cations / Anions, me/L 3.0 / 2.8
Sodium, Na 21
Potassium, K 2
Calcium, Ca 28
Magnesium, Mg 8
Total Hardness, CaCO3 103
Nitrate, NO3-N 2.3 (SAFE)
Sulfate, SO4 12
Chloride, Cl 48
Carbonate, CO3 < 1
Bicarbonate, HCO3 59
Total Alkalinity, CaCO3 49

Also, here is an excellent introduction to water chemistry, and aspreadsheet for calculating water modifications.

  1. I live in Southern Carroll County, and am using well water. I also live on property that borders Liberty Resevoir, so my water profile should be very similar to Baltimore City water. I used a testing service to provide me with data about my water. Ward Laboratories will provide a water test for brewers for a little under $40. All shipping costs are included.

Here is a sample of my results:

    pH 6.0
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Est, ppm 125

    Potassium, K 2
    Calcium, Ca 20
    Magnesium, Mg 5
    Total Hardness, CaCO3 71
    Nitrate, NO3-N 0.1 (SAFE)
    Sulfate, SO4-S < 1
    Chloride, Cl 41
    Carbonate, CO3 < 1
    Bicarbonate, HCO3 35
